چکیده

The present investigation was undertaken with a view to study Cytological behavior of F1 interspecific hybrids of diploid wild perennial species Helianthus maximilini (2n = 34) and with cultivated sunflower Helianthus annuus (2n = 34) prebred line M-106. The interspecific hybrids have annual life cycle with the diploid somatic chromosome number thirty four. Chromosome association represented by univalents, bivalents, trivalents, besides the formation of normal bivalents, numerous irregularities observed during diakinesis and metaphase I of hybrids. In addition to these several types of chromosome irregularities like chromosome bridges and fragments, laggards and micronuclei were also noticed in considerable number of PMCs. The pollen viability of these F1 hybrids is very less compared to their parent, may be due to irregular behavior of chromosomes during meiosis in addition to environmental effect. The performance of these hybrids was either superior or nearer to their cultivated parent, but percentage of seed set of the two hybrids is low compared to parent, the existence of negative correlation of pollen fertility and chromosome abnormalities could explain low seed set. As due to these processes, narrow genetic base of the cultivated sunflower gets broadened with the infusion of genes from wild species.

Triploid Production from Interspecific Crosses of Two Diploid Perennial Helianthus with Diploid Cultivated Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Wild Helianthus species are a valuable genetic resource for the improvement of cultivated sunflower. We report the discovery and characterization of a unique high frequency production of triploids when cultivated sunflower was pollinated by specific accessions of diploid Helianthus nuttallii T. & G. and H. maximiliani Schr. Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) analyses indicated that the triplo...

Determination of drought tolerance related traits in Helianthus argophyllus, Helianthus annuus, and their hybrids

Drought is a major constraint for sunflower (Helianthus annuus) production worldwide. Drought tolerance traits have been identified in the related wild species Helianthus argophyllus. This study was initiated to develop sunflower drought-tolerant genotypes by crossing cultivated sunflower with this species and analyze drought tolerance traits in the H. annuus and H. argophyllus populations, H. ...

Genetics of species differences in the wild annual sunflowers, Helianthus annuus and H. petiolaris.

Much of our knowledge of speciation genetics stems from quantitative trait locus (QTL) studies. However, interpretations of the size and distribution of QTL underlying species differences are complicated by differences in the way QTL magnitudes are estimated. Also, many studies fail to exploit information about QTL directions or to compare inter- and intraspecific QTL variation. Here, we compre...

Reconstructing the origin of Helianthus deserticola: survival and selection on the desert floor.

The diploid hybrid species Helianthus deserticola inhabits the desert floor, an extreme environment relative to its parental species Helianthus annuus and Helianthus petiolaris. Adaptation to the desert floor may have occurred via selection acting on transgressive, or extreme, traits in early hybrids between the parental species. We explored this possibility through a field experiment in the hy...

Allelotoxicity of Parthenium leaf extracts on cytomorphological behaviour of sunflower (Helianthus annuus).

In recent decades allelopathy has gained much attention in the sustainable agricultural systems. It is necessary to trace out the mechanism of action of allelochemicals of plants on other plants. Allelochemicals of different plants interact differently with each other. In the present context an attempt has been made to study the influence of allelochemicals released by Parthenium on the growth,...
